How to do an if/then statement with a variable?

I have a table which records each “level” an employee passes.
Level Count
———————–
Beginner 1
Intermediate 2
Expert 3

I have a separate document that has a list of all of the levels.
List of Levels:
Beginner
Intermediate
Expert

What I need to do is say something like this:
If “Level” == Beginner and “Count” == 1
Then Do something
ElseIf “Level” == Intermediate and “Count” == 2
Then Do something else
ElseIf “Level” == Expert and “Count” == 3
Then Do something else
Else
Do something else

It doesn’t matter what I do in each case. I just need to know if I do each case properly. Can someone show me how to do this.

A:

If you want to stick with a query, then you can use like:
select * from table
where level = ‘Beginner’ and count = 1
union all
select * from table
where level = ‘Intermediate’ and count = 2
union all
select * from table
where level = ‘Expert’ and count = 3

This would return all entries that match both the level and count requirements.
If your document is on a different server (or in a different database or you just don’t want to pollute your level table) then you can do this with a JOIN:
select * from tbl as level1
join tbl as level2
on level1.level = level2.level and level1.count = level2.count
where level
